For optional (normal) retirement, you must have 25 years of MPD service and for deferred retirement (age 55) you must have 5 years of MPD service. There is no years of service requirement for performance of duty (POD) disability retirement, but 5 years of MPD service is required for nonperformance of duty (non-POD) disability retirement. If you are required to retire due to your age (60 unless extended by MPD), you will be retired under optional retirement if you have at least 5 years of MPD service. The District of Columbia Police and Firefighters Retirement and Relief Board (PFRRB) determines if you are eligible for optional or disability retirement. DCRB determines deferred retirement eligibility.
